How to choose a wireless charger? -- forward

wireless charger

Wireless charging sounds great. No cables bother us seems pretty nice. So, let's get one for our selves.

At first, we need to know more about our cellphones. Any cellphone with qi wireless charge ability (built-in qi receiver, will be mentioned on package), otherwise you'll need to get an extended receiver for your cellphone. check the list below:

for iPhone:

for cellphones without QI receiver built-in, please check our article: How to extend wireless charge to my cellphone?

How can we know the quality of it? Honesty, we can not guarantee you which one or which brand is absolutely great, that'll be a lie. But we can get more information from price, major components, market position, and customer review.

Price: not much to say.  mostly you'll get what you paid for, besides cheated.

Major components:  Inductive coupling - coil, controller IC and power source

Inductive coil is the key to transfer power between electric and magnetic, a large currence goes through it when charging. it produces most heat and control the inductive range, which decide where to plate your phone, and how far it can work, and the quality also controls the major power transfer efficiency. And,  The best QI inductive coil supplier is TDK from Japan, Google and LG's wireless charger has it's first generation coil inside. It just launched the 3 coil combination solution, which has a great improvement.

Controller IC is another key technology, which decide the frequency, noise, currence while the devide is working. An inferior IC may cause electromagnetic wave which effect the signal of your cellphone. TI from US, and Samsung from Korea are 2 best chip supplier in this area.

Power source: there are always energy wast in electric, a better power source can get you more power at first. 5W from USB is not enough for wireless charging, except you can spend 8 or 10 hours to charge a phone. 10W is the least power requirement. So, check the power source carefully, or you may get something you do not want to use again.

Customer review: 1000 words from the seller, can not match 1 word from a customer. so choose one with good customer review.

How does wireless charge work?

Wireless charging seems to be a new and fashion technology, cool and modern. But truthfully , this technology has been used for over 100 years in other areas, sure you’ve heard its name: TRANSFORMER
transformer
How does a transformer work? I’m sure you’ve learned on your physical class. Don’t remember? OK, check the picture below, it’ll help you understand.
 transformer theory
This is a simple sketch map for the theory of transformer. Power transfer in 3 steps Electricity à Magnetic à Electricity. This is exactly how wireless charge works.
 wireless power theory
We have a transmitter and a receiver in every wireless charge situation. Only they are separated in a charge pad(transmitter) and a cellphone(receiver).
wireless charge
This seems simple, but it’s not. The most important places in this technology are:
1. Power --- transfer enough power for loader
2. Distance --- increase transfer distance
3. Efficiency --- decrease waste energy
4. Target --- recognize transfer target
5. Heat --- decrease heat while transfer

We now can get wireless power in a few situations, such as some electric vehicle, and cellphones. We believe that in the future, thank to our scientists and engineers’ brilliant idea and hard working, we may get rid of all cables and have unlimited power.
